For total beginners or those who know only a few chords. We’ll learn how to accompany songs with 9 basic chords, 4 different strums, bass runs and hammering-on. 17 great folk, country, and easy rock songs. Folk Standards
levels 1-2
For those who know basic chords but are still slow changing from one chord to the next (especially the F chord). We’ll review the basic strums and chords, do lots of chord drills, learn new chords, new strums, bass runs, and 18 timeless folk, country, and rock songs.

level 1

level 2+
Popular songs with easy strums and easy chords! You’ll learn how to use a flatpick, lots of acoustic rock strums, new chords, barre chords and great songs from artists like the Beatles, the Eagles, Neil Young, Indigo Girls, and many more.

Beginning Singing
(no guitar level)
Do you wish you had a better singing voice? We’ll learn vocal exercises and songs to further increase our vocal ranges, learn how to sing with more confidence, learn how to breathe correctly and sing with diaphragm support, learn how to sing in different styles and learn very basic harmonies to easy songs.

Already Picking Some

levels 2-3
A fast paced, technique building class that will introduce you to Travis style fingerpicking patterns, blending rhythms together, plus basic song arranging and embellishment. Songs from James Taylor, John Denver, C,S,N, Bob Dylan, etc.

Folk Favorites #2
level 2
Slightly faster paced than Folk Standards. We’ll learn new chords and strums, moving bass lines, easy fills, get started with barre chords, and accompany 18 great folk, country and rock songs.

Singer/Songwriters #4
Level 4+
Singer/songwriters are the heart of the acoustic guitar revival. Complete vocal and tablature guitar arrangements from artists like James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Cheryl Wheeler, Richard Thompson, Keb’ Mo’, and more. All guitar arrangements are in tab.

Country Classics #1
(level 2-3)
Intro to flatpicking with an emphasis on repertoire and learning to flatpick with typical bluegrass and country runs. An easy going workshop that draws from a wide variety of country music including bluegrass, hillbilly, country and western, country swing, and gospel.

Expanded Repertoire #1

(level 3)
Songs from many sources including James Taylor, Paul Simon, Utah Phillips, Karla Bonoff, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, John Denver, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Woody Guthrie, Buck Owens, American folksongs, etc. Emphasis on repertoire, but you should already know a fingerpicking pattern or two (Travis style).

Celtic & American Roots #2
levels 3 and 4
Traditional and contemporary songs in the Celtic, Rural blues, Appalachian and old-time traditions. From gorgeous celtic melodies to foot-tapping fingerstyle blues tunes, join us as we survey the best that these traditions have to offer. All guitar arrangements are in tablature.

Harmony Singing - All Style
no guitar level
Duets, trios and quartet arrangements of folk, country, bluegrass, blues, and rock and roll songs. All parts are written out but you don’t have to be able to sight read to take this class.

 

 

Summer Workshops begin June 17, 18, 19 and meet for nine weekly sessions. They cover a variety of levels. All workshops meet one hour each week. We meet in groups of 15 - 20 in a relaxed atmosphere where there is opportunity for individual attention when needed. All the workshop materials (songsheets) are free. Recording devices (MP3, etc) arewelcome. Please use batteries.

All Workshops - $160. TAKE TWO workshops during the same series, discount your second class by $10.

Workshops are led by Carol McComb, a Bay area singer, songwriter, recording artist and guitarist with over 35 years experience teaching these classes. She has authored a best selling guitar book, written many articles for Acoustic Guitar magazine and taught at many music camps in the U.S. and Canada. She has toured extensively in duos and bands and also with Linda Ronstadt and Joan Baez.

Workshops are held in Palo Alto at Gryphon Stringed Instruments, 211 Lambert Ave., Palo Alto (corner of Park & Lambert).

1. Fill out the Class Registration Form and mail with fee, to Carol McComb, Guitar Workshops, 211 Lambert Avenue, Palo Alto, CA 94306. Early enrollment is advised, as many of the workshops fill up early.

2. Fill out the Class Registration Form, bring to class the first night, and Pay using Paypal/Credit Card, (above. Early enrollment is advised, as many of the workshops fill up early.

This procedure registers you in the workshop(s) you choose. (You will NOT be notified unless your workshop is already full.) Just come to your workshop and check in.

Please note that your workshop fees are non-refundable unless your workshop is already full or you cancel two full weeks before the start of the series. You may transfer your fee to another class during the first two weeks of the series.
