MONDAYS
Monday 6PM: Slow Track Fun #14 for Guitar & Uke (level 2) New Class! An easy going class for those who know some basic guitar chords or want to get started on the ukulele. We will learn at least a dozen well-known songs from a wide variety of sources. Songs from artists like Bonnie Raitt, Woody Guthrie, Ray Charles, Hank Williams, John Denver, Creedence Clearwater, Emmylou Harris, American traditional songs and many more. We will also learn how to start playing songs by ear. 7PM: More Simple Fills, Runs and Riffs
(level 2-3) This brand new class will focus on learning when and how to add runs, fills and ending riffs to the phrases of any kind song to spice up your arrangements and apply them to a wide variety of styles. We'll learn the concepts behind these three tried and true additions to creating your own arrangements whether you add them on the fly during a jam session or when you are creating your own arrangement with more lasting intention. We will use tablature when it's needed to get across these ideas so they stick. |
Please note: I'm having trouble editing this page. Please email me at [email protected]
to sign up for either the 5pm Folk Standards class or the 6pm Americana class. Thanks!
6PM Americana #39 (level 3-4)
Always New Songs! We feature contemporary music that incorporates elements of American roots music styles plus the origins of American roots music. We’ll learn songs from artists like Lyle Lovett, Gillian Welch, John Hiatt, Fleetwood Mac, Aiofe O'Donovan, Bruce Cockburn, Sarah Jarosz, Emmylou Harris, Tracy Chapman, etc. In addition to learning songs from current Americana artists, we will also learn songs from some of the primary sources of American roots music. All guitar arrangements are written in tablature. Please contact me at [email protected] to sign up for this class. I'm having problems editing my website. 7pm Songwriter's Circle
(no guitar level) Always New! Open to songwriters of all levels, including beginners. Bring songs you've already written and your new songs! We will delve deeply into the cadence of lyric and its relationship to melody and rhythmic phrasing, including the use of rests. This class will include weekly exercises and assignments in addition to the work we do in class. It will be fun and informative. Please sign up early for this class. It will be popular and the class size is limited. |
WEDNESDAYS
5:30PM: All Neil Young #2 (level 2-3) Taught in-person in Portola Valley and also live via Zoom. Detailed yet relatively easy to play arrangements of Neil Young's wonderful songs. While Neil's iconic songs may be reminiscent of the eras when they were first released, they are equally timeless and will remain so. We'll learn the best of both his guitar and also his piano arrangements (adapted for the guitar of course) in both finger style and flat pick styles. All songs will be written in tablature, but will also work well with a more simplified approach. 6:30PM: Starting to Play (level 1)
Taught in-person in Portola Valley and also live via Zoom. I am now offering this very thorough introduction to playing the guitar both live-streamed via Zoom and also in person. Learn all the basics in 8 weeks! This fast moving class will cover all 9 basic chords, several strum patterns, a scale in the key of G, how to use hammering-ons and bass runs, plus 15 great songs from country, rock and folk sources. 7:30PM: Harmony Singing
(no guitar level) Taught in person in Portola Valley and live via Zoom. Come sing with us in our new location in Portola Valley! The room is airy and plenty big enough for us to spread out! If you live too far away to take the class in person, take the class via Zoom! We will videotape all classes. New songs! Wonderful duet and trio and arrangements of country, bluegrass and rock songs from your favorite artists. All parts are written out in detail but you don't have to be able to sight read to take this class. |
THURSDAYS
5PM: Light Rock & Pop #2 (level 2+) Please note: Light Rock and Pop #1 and #2 are the same level, but the repertoire is different. This class is tons of fun! Our strums for this class are mostly flat-picked, but it's possible to play all of these songs finger style if you prefer. You'll learn good flatpack technique, lots of new strum patterns and chords and more than a dozen fabulous songs by artists like The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, Green Day, Sheryl Crow, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones and more. 6PM: Bluegrass and Country Leads #17
(Songs level 2-3; leads level 3) New class! Wonderful songs with easy to play leads in Maybelle Carter’s distinctive lead style. The material in this class will be a unique blend of bluegrass, Carter Family songs and newly written songs in these traditions. We will begin with easy to play leads and will gradually introduce more complex leads. All guitar arrangements are written in tablature. |
